A sua magnitude na superf\u00edcie da Terra varia de 25 a 65 microtesla (0,25 a 0,65 gauss). Grosso modo, \u00e9 o campo de um dipolo magn\u00e9tico atualmente inclinado com um \u00e2ngulo de cerca de 10 graus em rela\u00e7\u00e3o ao eixo de rota\u00e7\u00e3o da Terra, como se houvesse uma barra magn\u00e9tica colocada com esse \u00e2ngulo no centro da Terra.
